WORLD HEALTH ORGANISTATION – Still ‘not clear’ if Omicron COVID variant is highly transmissible or more dangerous than Delta variant.

The United Nation health agency experts said their researchers in South Africa and around the world are currently conducting studies and researches to better understand the aspects of Omicron variant, but in the current situation, it is unclear whether Omicron is more transmissible as compared to other present variants, including Delta around the globe.

“The number of people testing positive has risen in areas of South Africa affected by this variant, but epidemiologic studies are underway to understand if it is because of Omicron or other factors”, WHO’s Technical Advisory Group on Virus Evolution (TAG-VE) issued a statement.

The Experts also stated that it is unclear whether Omicron causes more severe disease compared with other variants.

“While initial incoming data suggests high increased rates of hospitalization in South Africa, this can be a reason because high number of people are infected, rather than a specific infection with Omicron”, the experts said.

Experts added it is early to suggests that Omicron causes different COVID-19 symptoms.

Higher risk of reinfection

TAG-VE said preliminary evidence indicates people with history with COVID-19 get reinfected more easily with Omicron when compared to other variants. Creating serious concerns among the medical authorities.

Latest reports on infections have been among younger individuals who tend to have more mild disease, “but gauging  severity level of Omicron variant can take days or even a few weeks in total”, said by experts.

Research and analysis is in full swing regarding the new variant. Various health experts and commercial medicine giants have vested their complete support in the research worldwide.

“People are requested to follow all the safety protocols and remain calm”, a senior expert was heard suggesting.
